Someone is setting death-spells targeting mortals and elf blood alike. With her mentor out of commission, it’s up to half-trained Warder Mona Lisa Kubrek to stop the magic. Despite being told repeatedly her job is to nullify spells and not go after the source, too many people are at risk for her to not track the spell-caster down. Even meeting a sexy half-elf shifter won’t distract her from her goal.
Except Cart Dupree is fully trained and has the team to search for the evildoer, so she’d be stupid to not use his expertise. Stupid is something she can’t afford to be, not with her enemy’s henchmen after her. Later she’ll deal with Cart and his questions about her special abilities and the non-standard training her mentor has given her. Right now, they need to unravel where the magician is, and who he is, before he builds enough power to decimate them all.
First, though, they need to stay alive.
Q) What inspired you to write this story?
You know how sometimes you angle your chair so the glare of the sun isn't hitting your face and making you squint? Several years ago I had a story idea pop into mind where woman was sitting in a recliner that was angled so she would be sitting smack dab in the middle of the light coming in her windows from a weak winter sun. I wondered why was she sitting there. Well, it was because she was tired and the sun reenergized her. But then she heard something, something on the radio and she had to get up and act. The woman's story (Tania for those of you who have read A Matter of Fate) along with a couple of other story ideas I had been playing around with, developed into a novel featuring the world you see in A Matter of Fate. But the Tania's story was too cumbersome, too filled with backstory and information dumps as I developed the world to work. With a daunting amount of editing facing me, I thought, what if I write a story about the same events but from another perspective? A Matter of Fate is that story.
Q) How long did it take you to write?
Years. First, as I said above, I wrote the entire story out form a different perspective while developing the world – the magic and the mythos a lot of stuff which is only a line or two here and there but I needed to know it so it would be consistent. Then, facing massive revisions, I decided to rewrite it from Mona's perspective. And, with other stories clamoring for attention and real life throwing me curveballs, it took several years for A Matter of Fate to come to fruition. The good news is now that I have a lot of the world set in my head, the next stories are going much more quickly!
Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Embarrassing my characters. It is so much fun to put them in awkward and uncomfortable places. Mona in particular is a bit clueless about men, and the extent of Cart's attraction to her, so there were several times I took advantage of this.
Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Wrapping up a story. I get very attached to my characters and sometimes it's hard to end the story and let them go.
Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I'd be Eleanor Roosevelt because of her wonderful, self-depreciating sense of humor and her sense of justice.
Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I have a shank bone I store and pull out every year. I had to replace it semi-recently when my fridge died so it's only three years old. The one I replaced was six years old.
Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I'm getting ready to submit a follow-up book to Crimson Romance. The working title is Buffalo Gal, but I'm very sure that name will change!
